Cost Of Iraq War 200 Million A Day
Americans today are asking the important question about how much is the war in Iraq costing us and the numbers are truly staggering when you see how much has been spent. Today, it is estimated that more than $1 trillion has been spent and that it is costing the American people about $200 million more each day. You are probably thinking 'that is a lot of money' and you would be right. Now, your mind wanders and you start to think about whether or not that money has been spent wisely and if we should continue spending $200 million more every day. The answer to this question is not easy for our elected government officials in Washington.
A better question might be 'what are we willing to pay to remain safe'. That will definitely have you thinking in another direction. What was the actual cost to the United States for the September 11 attack? Has anyone actually sat down to figure out the cost to the buildings and airplanes destroyed, to the losses incurred by business in many areas or the value of a human life? These factors must be considered when you think about what the cost of the war in Iraq is doing to our country's budget. On one hand, you can say that no cost is too high if the United States faced a potential threat from terrorists. On the other hand, you can think about how much $1 trillion would do for our own country. The failing infrastructure, homeless people, illegal immigrants, the options are unlimited on how we can use the money here at home. While using the money for projects at home might sound better to most people. We can take care of our elderly population, provide more free school lunches to children living in poverty, we can help create new jobs and provide a place to live for homeless families, and this list goes on and on. But what happens when the next terrorist attack hits our shores? And, we all know that it is going to happen eventually. We have seen the United Kingdom and Spain attacked in recent years and there are constant reports of attempted attacks that have been detected in advance and avoided. What price will you pay for freedom? It is hard for people to truly understand the costs involved and why the money should be spent in a foreign country. The cost of the war in Iraq is relatively small when you compare it to losing an American city to a terrorist attack. We must remember that we are going to be attacked. Whether the terrorists come next week, next month or next year, they are patiently planning for this and waiting for the right opportunity. It might be possible through our many connections to find out in advance about this future attack and to stop it. And, like the commercials on television, that would "priceless"! |
